The blind--teaching the Blind

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

ATRIEV is a computer school for the blind established for and by the blind in 1994 to fully utilize adaptive technology in facilitating equal access to education, employment, and similar opportunities. We conduct computer-literacy training and related programs for persons with visual impairment, guided by the vision of their integration into the mainstream in schools, workplaces, and similar social institutions and processes.

ATRIEV’s Board of Trustees is composed of dedicated and reputable members of the Philippine society. They are pioneers or experts in business, academe and information technology. ATRIEV is proud to have gathered together these reputable men and women to help in achieving the organization’s dream in making the future brighter for the Filipino blind.

ATRIEV’s Board of Trustees:

Peter L. Wallace

Chairman

With a Big Heart

ATRIEV Chairman of the Board and President of the Wallace Business Forum

Mr. Peter Leslie Wallace

To many, Mr. Peter Leslie Wallace is the most prominent political and economic forecaster of the Philippines. His own company, The Wallace Business Forum (formed in 1982 and formerly EIU Philippines Inc.) provides advisory services to more than 160 multinational corporations and aid agencies in the country, as well as advising successive Philippine governments on foreign investment. Wallace has developed extraordinary connections and contacts, and is an important voice for business within government. His analyses and forecasts have been recognized as balanced and insightful. The Australian magazine, Business Review Week, listed Mr. Wallace as the tenth of the 20 most prominent Australians in Asia.

But to ATRIEV, Peter Leslie Wallace is a man of dedication and commitment. He has a big heart in helping the blind not through dole outs but by giving the blind an opportunity to learn and to earn.

Born in Australia on June 3, 1939, Peter Wallace began work in 1957 as a cadet engineer with the then Amalgamated Wireless of Australia. A career in sales led him to Manila in 1970 where he worked as a marketing manager and chief executive before founding AYC Consultants in 1982. He was chief executive of 3 multinational companies in Manila during the period 1975 to 1981. He has been active in the community as President of the Australian New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (a role he served for 10 years) and he is still a director, on the Board of iAcademy, the Tower Club, Universal LRT Corporation and The Forum for Family Planning and Development. He was Commodore of the Manila Yacht Club, is President of the Caliraya Lake Conservation Society and is a member of almost every business chamber and association.

Being a resident of the Philippines for 30 years, Peter Wallace has seen the Philippines more than any Filipino has. His warmth and hospitality is very much Filipino. Peter is also married to a Filipina, the former Estee Rivera and has 2 children now studying at universities in Sydney. In fact, they already celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

In April 2002, Mr. Wallace was invited to a graduation. It turned out to be a graduation of blind students of ATRIEV. Thus inspired by the way these blind students put so much effort in bettering themselves and their situation and beat the odds by learning computer skills, Mr. Wallace through his companies has been helping out ATRIEV through fundraising, assembling the board of directors, generating publicity for the organization, and general advice. Mr. Wallace personally markets the skills of ATRIEV graduates in the ICT field, especially for corporate transcription services. Mr. Wallace personally attends to key concerns of the organization especially in moving ATRIEV forward.

With the challenge of wanting to do more, Wallace Business Forum and AYC Consultants have given deeper meaning to the celebration of their 25th anniversary on November 29, 2007. The Wallace Business Forum has donated to ATRIEV money that was otherwise intended for the 25th anniversary cocktails of the company. It has become Mr. Wallace's personal mission to try to find a better life for the vision-impaired.

From Peter Wallace’s very own words “These young people had fought against all the odds to make something better of their lives — not to be just beggars on the streets. … Because they were helping themselves. Not just sitting back waiting for a hand out.”
